Planting a Legacy Woodland

For our Countryside Skills Pathway, working with Wildsmith Hotels’ Hipping Hall and The Woodland Trust has been a hugely productive partnership all-round.

On this project, our students were given the chance design and build a six acre ‘Legacy Woodland’, populated with native species and giving guests an extra area to explore and enjoy during their stay at Hipping Hall.

Thanks to the backing of Wildsmith Hotels, and with expertise from The Woodland Trust, our students have the opportunity of gaining practical hands-on experience of working on the landscape for professional clients.

Our Year 10 and 11 students have successfully planted 500 trees as part of five year planting scheme developed by The Woodland Trust alongside staff at Hipping Hall. The plan includes a diverse range of native trees to match the area’s natural beauty, creating a new woodland that Wildsmith  Hotels wants to be a permanent legacy for future generations. For our students, the project is a perfect example of how their pathway is all about learning countryside skills in an ‘outdoor classroom’.

Thorpe Trees (specialist grower of trees and hedges) based in York supply trees for the Woodland Trust & delivered 350 to Hipping Hall in March 2019.  Our students took great enjoyment in planting these!  Huge thanks to The Woodland Trust for providing these beautiful trees and paying for the courier!

Hipping Hall is part of the family-owned Wildsmith Hotels group that also includes Forest Side in Grasmere and The Ryebeck overlooking Windermere.

Hipping Hall consists of a collection of Grade II listed buildings dating back to the 15th century that had a major refurbishment in 2017.
