Helping a Huge Community Effort!

Does community engagement get any bigger?

An incredible 450 pupils from 17 local primary schools, all enjoying day of tag rugby training plus matches!

Organised by Kirkby Lonsdale RUFC, with backing from Pye Motors, the Primary Rugby Festival was also supported by Cumbria Rugby, who trained our Sport Pathway students to help run this hugely successful day.

Our students worked alongside senior players and coaches from KLRUFC to deliver a packed day of activities, using the skills they’d developed over several weeks of preparation led by Cumbria Rugby Development Officer, Gary Holmes.

Taken together, this amazing festival is a perfect example of how QEStudio is keen to play its part in community projects.

Our Sport Pathway students helped with the whole day of activities at KLRUFC’s Primary Rugby Festival, from running mass warm-ups for all 450 pupils to smaller training and skills sessions, as well as refereeing matches.   It was all a great team effort thanks to the club’s organisation and the input from their senior players and coaches, as all as the expertise of Cumbria Rugby.

To prepare for KLRUFC’s Primary Rugby Festival, our Sport Pathway students worked for several sessions with a team led by Gary Holmes, the Rugby Development Officer for Cumbria Rugby. These sessions covered a wide range of areas, including classroom based sessions in topics such as ‘rugby values’ through to computer-based sessions leading to certification for handling concussion. On top of all that, of course, the students enjoyed hands-on sessions on skills and refereeing! Many thanks to Gary and his team for being so generous with their time and expertise.

Kirkby Lonsdale RUFC has been a cornerstone of community rugby for decades, with  generations of our students enjoying the club’s development pathway from mini & youth through to senior teams.

So the club can justifiably claim to have one of the best mini and youth setups around, certainly in the North West. Having started 30 years ago, the club’s  mini and youth section has grown from a handful of players to around 400 who come every Sunday throughout the season!

The club’s Community Team can now offer schools bespoke coaching provision. This could start with a Tag rugby coaching program for primary schools and then follow with more developmental coaching for older age groups and abilities.

Cumbria Rugby Union have a structure in place through England Rugby to support the development of the game across the County, including the role of Garry Holmes as Community Coach for South Lakes, Barrow and Eden.
